Hubs and Trails

Freedom Park and the Eden YMCA are recreational and transportation convergence nodes that will provide information and maps of the proposed greenways.  These areas have been selected as the Greenway Hubs.  The locations are easily accessible to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.  Currently, these locations are highly used recreational areas within the city.  Freedom Park will be the major Greenway Hub and the YMCA will be the minor Greenway Hub.  Freedom Park will be the "Gateway" to the Greenway Trail System and a sign kiosk shall be designed and established to show its importance.  The Greenway Hubs will include trailheads that connect to the various reaches of the greenway system.

The Eden Greenway Master Plan consists of a hierarchy of three primary greenway trails, three secondary greenway trails, four district spur trails, and six school spurs.  The hierarchy of each trail is represented with different line types.

The Primary Greenway Trails follow the natural waterways and riparian corridors and shall be developed before the secondary greenway trails and spur trails to ensure preservation and conservation of the rivers.  These trails include the Smith River Greenway, Matrimony Creek Greenway, and the Dan River Greenway.

The Secondary Greenway Trails are multi-use trails, but may also include some specified uses.  These greenway trails are to be located along existing features such as utility easements, rights-of-way and abandoned rail lines that extend to, but do not always follow the main course of rivers, streams, or creeks.  These trails include the Lower Saura Town Equestrian Trail, Spray Historic Loop, and the Calcium Carbide Greenway.

The Spur Trails are multi-use trails located along existing roadways, sidewalks, abandoned rail lines and  sanitary sewer easements. The Spur Trails provide a connection from downtown districts, local schools and other areas of interest to the Primary and Secondary Greenway Trails.  Phasing and development of the spur trails shall be correlated with the downtown revitalization projects and should rely on public interests and opinion.  These trails include the Arthur J. Draper Spur, Meadow Green Central Spur, Knollwood Central District Spur, Leaksville Historic Spur and Local School Spurs.
