Official requests for street adoption in the Adopt-A-Street
program will be made in writing to the City of Eden
offices. Streets will be allocated on a first come first serve
basis.
Upon receiving the written request the City will mail
the Adopt-A-Street packet of information to the group requesting
adoption. The packet will include information describing the
requirements of the program and the contract which the group
will complete. After receiving the signed contract and sign
wording has been approved, the sign will be printed and placed
on the street.
A copy of the agreement will be mailed to the contracting
organization along with a letter detailing the steps necessary
for beginning the clean up process.
The Appearance Commission, acting as a board, will
reserve the right to approve sign wording, streets requested
for adoption and to amend policy.
If a written request is received for the same street
before the contract is returned by Group I, time will be allowed
Group I to complete the adoption process, recognizing that the
organization or church may require board approval at a
regularly scheduled monthly meeting. A thirty (30) day period
will be allowed for the completion of the adoption process.
Reports cards documenting clean-up efforts will be
given to each group coordinator when safety vests and trash
bags are obtained. Completed report cards will be kept on file
and each file checked periodically. Groups without evidence
of regular clean-ups (every 60 days) will be contacted and informed
that without proper documentation of clean-up, sign removal
will be necessary.
With 133 street miles in the City of Eden, there are
both clean and littered streets. Consideration of the amount
or absence of litter on the street requested will be given before
approval of that street for adoption.
Example: There are numerous "clean"
well kept residential areas in Eden maintained by the residents
living on that street. While it may be appropriate for the neighbors
to adopt a street which they already maintain, it would be inappropriate
for a business or one individual to receive the benefit of a
sign claiming a community service which is actually rendered
by others.
The Community Appearance Commission will encourage
organizations to participate in the State Department of Transportations
Adopt-A-Highway Program when interest is expressed in a State
maintained roadway. The Commission will assist the efforts of
the DOT in obtaining program participation for all state maintained
roadways in and around the City of Eden.
The goal of the Adopt-A-Street program is to reduce
the amount of litter in the City of Eden. The signs are meant
to provide evidence of community support in this effort. The
Appearance Commission must encourage the community to maintain
a proper prospective regarding the Adopt-A-Street sign. The
focal point of the program is a cleaner, Eden, not a
means of club or business advertisement.
At the time the Adopt-A-Street agreement is sent to
the respective adopting organization, the organization will
be asked to submit the exact location of where they would like
the Adopt-A-Street sign to be erected. The city reserves the
right of final placement of the sign and no sign will be moved
once erected unless a safety problem occurs or unless the agreement
is terminated by either parties.
